Ashburton finished their final weekend of pre-season fixtures with games away at Budleigh Salterton and Ivybridge.
On Saturday Budleigh won the toss and invited Ashburton to have a bat. Ashes made a good start as Jake Pascoe (19) and Lloyd White (20) added 39 before both fell in quick succession to Ed Doble (2 for 13). Ash Berry (10) and Dan Coles then took the score to 71 before Joel Murphy's introduction into the attack sparked a collapse as he took 4 wickets for 4 runs. Only Coles (28) made any real headway and when he was dismissed at 103 for 8 Ashes were in danger of not seeing out their 40 over allocation. A partnership of 50 between Matt Churchill (35) and Steve Edmonds (16no) gave the total a bit more respectability as Ashes were all out for 153 with 2 balls of the innings remaining.
Budleigh openers James Doble (51 retired) and Will Oxland (49) raced out of the blocks and added 108 in good time before Matt Coon (2 for 34) broke the stand and then trapped overseas recruit Kimber LBW. That was as good as it got for the Chargers as the hosts cantered home by 8 wicket inside 24 overs. Both sides then agreed to play to 30 overs for some extra time in the middle and Chris Yeo managed to pick up a couple of wickets in his first spell of the season.
On Sunday Ivybridge won the toss and decided to have a bat. They posted a sizeable 250 for 6 led by Chris Greenhouse (50 retired) and Martin Key (47). George Yabsley (2 for 55) was the pick of the bowlers and there were single wickets for Toby Pascoe, Felix Partridge and Ashton West. Jerry Crouch and Robin Lambert both bowled economical spells.
Nearly all of the Ashburton top order chipped in as Marcus West (27), Yabsley (28), Lloyd White (39) and Chris Yeo (33) took them to 156 for 4. Jacob Kopparambil then dismissed White and ran through the lower order taking 5 for 15 from 7 overs as Ashes dipped to 163 for 9. Nick Yabsley (15no) and Lambert (4no) spent some useful time in the middle as the innings closed on 184 for 9 after 40 overs.
This coming weekend sees the start of the league fixtures with the first team welcoming Stoke Gabriel and the second team travelling to play Teignmouth and Shaldon.
