Chargers welcome Malan for 2023 campaign.

Ashburton Cricket Club are delighted to welcome Jonathan Malan as their overseas player for the upcoming 2023 season.

Members may recognise the name, as Malan was engaged as the overseas player at Yelverton last season, where he topped the C West bowling charts with 34 wickets at an average of just 16.21. His best off-spinning figures of 4/23 coming against Cornwood 2nd XI.

In addition to finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the league, Malan also finished 6th in the batting charts, having chalked up 443 runs at 31.64. As a qualified coach and video analyst, Malan will bolster the playing roster at the club, whilst also assist off the pitch with our adult and junior setups.

Commenting on the signing, Club Captain Steve Edmonds reflected; “When we knew Jonathan was available and keen, it was a no-brainer from the start. He was a fierce competitor on the pitch when we played against him last year and will instantly improve our batting and bowling attack. It is rare that you get the opportunity to sign an overseas which is of known quantity, so naturally, we leapt at the chance. We look forward to welcoming him and trying to compete towards the top of the table.”

Looking ahead, Malan said “I am very happy to be joining Ashburton for the 2023 season and looking forward to a new experience with a new club and teammates. As my 2nd season in the Devon area after a very successful first season, I am hoping to do much better as the club’s Overseas player and not just on the field, but as a member of the Ashburton Cricket Club. Hopefully, I could help the team do well this season and assist all players and juniors with my coaching and experience in cricket. Having played against Ashburton last season and was very impressed with the competitive team they had and that was well organized, I can't wait to be part of the great setup for this season”
