Chargers add Martin and Messom to playing roster

Ashburton Cricket Club are delighted to announce the double signing of Ian Messom from Budleigh Salterton and Fergus Martin as our overseas player.

Fergus (27) is an experienced right-arm seam bowler who plays for Hutt District Cricket Club in Wellington, New Zealand. He has played Premier cricket in the Wellington region since 2011 and is an extremely reliable opening bowler who can swing the ball. Fergus has often taken on the mantle of bowling into the strong Wellington winds whilst relishing in pressure situations, especially bowling late in tight limited over games.

Fergus expressed his delight; "I couldn't be more excited to head over and get the season underway with Ashburton CC! I have heard only great things about the club and the area and can't wait to get stuck in helping the club on and off the field. I see that we finished 2nd in the C Div last season, so it would be amazing to go one better in 2020 and see Ashburton CC promoted!"

In addition, hard-hitting left-hander Ian Messom arrives from Budleigh Salterton to further strengthen the club's batting unit. Messom has recently located to Totnes having previously chalked up over 2500 runs for Beddington in the Surrey League, and added just shy of 1000 in his 35 innings at Budleigh Salterton.

Ashley Berry, moving in on his 6th consecutive season as the club captain, reflected on the two signings. "I am absolutely delighted to once again strengthen our squad during the winter. Fergus looks a fine proposition and is exactly what we were looking for and no doubt the club will give him a warm welcome as always. With his experience both on and off the pitch, I am sure he will be a fantastic addition whilst Ian will also ensure that we continue to bat positively, and deep into our innings. Both players will have a fantastic opportunity to showcase their talent as we look to continue our progress."
